City Celebrates National Arbor Day
The annual event inspires local students to plant and nurture trees
The city of Glendale will host an Arbor Day celebration to teach local schoolchildren about the importance of trees and their roots in the community. The event will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 28 at Rose Lane Park, located at 5003 W. Marlette Ave.
Third-grade students from Glenn F. Burton Elementary School will rotate through three different educational stations where they will plant trees and discover how trees help Glendale. Mayor Jerry P. Weiers will make a proclamation at the event and councilmember Ian Hugh of the Cactus District will also be present to award a plaque to Glenn F. Burton Elementary School.
For the 28th consecutive year, Glendale was recognized as a ‘Tree City USA’, by the Arbor Day Foundation. The foundation sponsors this nationwide program to help communities manage and expand their public tree programs. More than 3,600 communities are part of the movement from all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, some important benefits of trees include:
- Trees help absorb the sounds of traffic in urban areas by 40%.
- Neighborhoods with trees are seven to nine degrees cooler than those without.
- Trees reduce energy costs up to 25% by shading buildings and protecting them from winter winds.
- Homes with trees have higher property values.
- Green space plays a major role in improving mental and physical health.
Planting and maintaining trees absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, mitigating the effects of climate change.
